Stewards of Children

Behold, children are a gift of the Lord; the fruit of the womb is a reward.

Psalm 127:3 NASB

Time Flies!

As a parent, have you ever thought that you are temporarily in charge of an eternal being?  It’s temporary because children grow from diapers to playdates, to school, then out to the world. When you’re on the other side of parenting and have grown children, you realize how quickly time can go by.

Henry Ward Beecher once wrote, “There are only two lasting bequests we can hope to give our children. One of these is roots…the other, wings.”
Jonas Salk adds, “Roots to know where home is, wings to fly away and exercise what’s been taught them.”

Temporary Stewards of Eternal Beings

God, our Creator, had your child in mind long before YOU were even born (Psam 139).  They are gifts and it is an awesome responsibility of stewarding these wonderful presents.

So how do we practically go about this?

How can parents be good stewards of these eternal beings? Let’s start with defining ‘stewardship’:

conducting, supervising, or managing of something, especially the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one’s care.

God entrusts children into their parents’ care.

parenting is the ultimate gift

The giver of all gifts understands the awesome responsibility and time commitment attached to his gift of parenting. Fortunately, there is an instruction manual – the Bible – and the more familiar we as parents are with it, the more effective we will become in our parenting.

There are many supporting resources for parents to raise their child(ren) in the way they should go (Proverbs 22:6), giving them the roots and firm foundation in God’s Word that will uphold them when they take flight. CCC’s Family Ministry will be sharing supportive resources with you over time.
